Blackwork is a modern style influenced by very graphic art in stark black and white.  We are seeing highly detailed design work often influenced by pattern and shape.  Blackwork draws on many of the traditional styles of tattooing using tribal thinking and applying it in a modern way using imagery like mandalas, geometric designs, even Victorian pictorial images etc.  This style is very graphic and is very reliant on the relationship between tattooed and un-tattooed skin.  It’s characterized by large pieces that almost alter the viewers’ perception of that body part.  This style is bold & large.
